Totally not law related but I want to hear everyone’s experiences with buying a house in a different state. For context we are relocating from upstate NY to south eastern PA (around a four hour drive) and we have two-three months to buy a house before my husband starts his new job. We are OVER renting and are ready to buy and lay down some roots. My sister lives in the area so we are familiar with the area. This has been the most stressful thing ever. Literally nightmares.

I’ve had to buy houses from another country, and it is stressful. Key is finding a great realtor who understands what you’re looking for (so you first have to be very clear about your must-haves, dealbreakers, etc.) and who is willing to line up a bunch of viewings over a day or two and then one or both of you spending a weekend or two there. I will say one of our moves was from Europe to California and I had no previous connection to California and I always wished we’d rented for a year first instead of buying right away because I don’t think we would have chosen the house we did if we’d had more time/been more familiar with the housing stock and area.

I live in southeastern pa and the market is tough. Not a ton of inventory, things going above asking. You need to find a realtor you trust and have your sister on call to go see houses quickly. I know you don’t want to rent, but it may make sense for a year. To figure out exactly where you want to be and to not just settle for a house.

We bought our house in a different state at the end of 2021. The market was super tough then and our realtor was key to our success. We had no connections to the state so we spent a lot of time going over our must-haves and dealbreakers. Over three years later and I’m still in awe as to how she absolutely nailed the neighborhood we were after. That being said, while we love our home, in hindsight I regret not renting first: my husband’s job (reason for the move) didn’t end up working out and we knew this within the first 6 months but we had already bought a house.

Same state but was living in the Bay Area when I bought my house in LA (about a 7-8 hour drive), also on a 3 month deadline. Found the house on Redfin, used a very good established realtor a friend’s dad worked with (ended up coming in clutch — highly recommend working with a good realtor if you can find one), made the drive for open houses (we were able to fit them all in one weekend) and again for the inspection, my sister in the area did the final walkthrough for us and got the keys, hired movers who picked up all our furniture and boxes one morning and delivered them the next. It was a lot (and in retrospect I wish I would have taken some time off for the move itself), but honestly doable

Does anyone have tips regarding attending social events, such as happy hours with coworkers and express that drinking isn’t my preference?
With me being the only one on my team who doesn’t drink, it causes me to stick out, and others constantly question why I’m not drinking.
It kind of deters me from attending work events, but I know there’s a lot of benefitting in being around.

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?
