We had a team meeting yesterday, and I'm literally the only one who was focused. A colleague asks me if I'm about to comment, and I say no. Then, some guy I never talk to goes, "First time for everything!" Everyone laughs, including the manager. I'm new and keep to myself usually, and now I feel so embarrassed and don't know how to address it. What would you do?

I’d probably just brush it off and not give it more weight than it deserves. Sometimes people think they’re being funny without realizing how it lands. Staying focused and professional will speak louder than a comeback.

Unpopular opinion: “I’m the only one who was focused”….. you sure bout that? We had a new guy who made sure to comment on every single meeting at least three times, adding value or not. He wanted to appear far more intelligent than he was and made sure to speak up on every call to be seen and heard. What makes you believe you are the only one focusing? It seems, biased and based on their reaction you’re coming off as kissing @$$…. It’s okay to hold some things for notes or your 1:1 with your manager if it’s appropriate. To be crystal clear, I’m not telling you NOT to speak up, but just make sure it’s actually valuable when you do so it’s a well received contribution rather than added noise, or people wouldn’t be laughing in my opinion.

What else can I do with a masters degree in ESL? I taught at 3 different schools in 3 years. The first two I resigned because they weren’t a good fit and this year I was non renewed despite my performance improving. I honestly don’t think teaching is for me
