I highly recommend putting a bell on or near your door and taking their paw and hitting it before you go out. Trained our dog to hit that when he needed to go out and worked wonders. It’s a bit of a learning curve but I think our dog had it down in a few months and then rarely had accidents (sad tummy days). Good luck!
It’s been a couple years since I’ve had a puppy but here’s what I remember since we worked with a trainer
- At night time, puppy goes to bed in the crate, take them out by hand and carry them outside and stay out until he goes potty
- Don’t provide free access to water. When you give him water, take him out about 15-30 min after offering water. If he doesn’t go, restrict the area he has access to / watch carefully and take him out again after another 10 min or so
- Don’t have pee pads in the house since it associates being able to pee in the house
- Don’t be overly effusive or give treats when puppy goes potty successfully. Just give a command “go pee”, and if he does it, a calm “good boy”
- We never put up a bell, but our dog has a spot she’ll sit by the stairs when she wants to go outside
- No water at night after 9pm or so, take puppy out for one last pee around 11pm, and take him out around 6 or 7am
For most breeds, they inherently want to keep their den/house clean. Controlling water source and determining how soon after he needs to pee should help. Also make sure you’re cleaning previous accidents well with an enzyme cleaner. Good luck!
I second the bell option. We also took ours out more frequently at first until we established the habit of going outside. We started at every 15 minutes. We would go out, wait a few minutes and if they didn’t go, come back inside and go back 10-15 minutes later. Praise and treat only when there was success. It was a lot of work but pretty much potty trained in two/three weeks.

Google says it could take until 4-6 months. Crate training is definitely the easiest way, they won’t go in their bed.
My dog is 14 and has never fully understood. There was a long time she was pretty good about it but would still have accidents and now in her old age it is very hit or miss. Some dogs just are not smart.
That’s probably a more trainable dog than a chihuahua 😂
Supervise or crate until they learn
