I think a Rav 4 or CX5 would be a good option in SF. Short enough for parking and can handle trips to Tahoe if you get 4 wheel drive. If you can afford / want a luxury car, realize that many cars get dinged, run into / broken into here, which could be frustrating if you like to keep your car in perfect condition. I’ve seen people rear end into cars while
parking and drive off like nothing happened…
Another thing to consider is car length for parallel parking. I got a shorter car for this reason when moving to SF
Also think about the convenience of having a closed trunk (ie no SUV) windows so you can store some things but avoid window break ins. Unfortunate reality…
I’d avoid owning a car, if at all possible. Public transport is decent and Uber is always an option. With a car you have to possibly pay for parking, pay huge gas prices, and worry about break-ins.
Just rent a car if you’re only going to use it during ski season.
Can take the bus to Tahoe too
Based on my experience here it’s either or Tesla or Prius.
Any four-wheel drive sedan will do you fine.
