Depends on your commute/lifestyle. The city is for sure more fun and if you can take the Caltrain to your jobs, I would live in SF. But if you have to drive, you’d be better of living in the Peninsula or need to accept a 1+ hour commute each way. Aside from that, the Peninsula and South Bay are much warmer than SF in the summer, so if you want actual summer weather that is a big plus. And it depends what you prefer to be closer to- Sausalito and Napa up north or Half Moon Bay, the Santa Cruz wine region, etc. in the south. I live in Redwood City with a car and no kids and I take Caltrain up to SF to work. Happy to discuss my experiences if that would be helpful!
What’s your definition of fun? Have you considered SAD?
SF is just too cold and wet for me to live in every day. I live on the border of PA and MV. Decent 1 bedroom at $3600 in a 3-4 year old building. New buildings around here are $4300 or a bit more. I like hiking and being outdoors. I also prefer drivable areas. Don’t want to walk with my groceries. I enjoy SF and go up there whenever I feel like having the city kind of fun.
A1 nailed it with that first line. And second basically everything else they said.
Also Palo Alto & Mountain View are cheaper (not cheap) but cheaper than SF.
Wife & I (no kids) live in Noe Valley, SF and she commutes to Cupertino daily, she has a tech shuttle so driving without the stress of actually driving. Ends up being about 50 mins on average, bad days it can get up to 1.5 hours. We wouldn’t trade the perks of SF to live closer to her work.
Favorite perks: Walkable, restaurant/ bar variety, easy to explore different neighborhoods and the city has a ton of character.
Also we get some pretty warm days in Noe Valley, definitely not as consistent as South Bay, but it’s one of the warmer spots in SF. And yes microclimates are extremely real in SF.
