I think about worse jobs I've had while applying/looking for new ones. I also tend to work on "secret" projects in the background that excite me and that make me feel like I'm adding value to the organization while trying to block out some of the other silly that's going on.
Mentor
I think about why I need to be there and disassociate. I’m there to pay my bills, to save up for my vacation and to provide for my family.
I don’t go above my role, I don’t drop down either in performance, but I just give an average effort and schedule more outside activities. Where I used to work until 7:00 I shut off right at 5:00 and go to a 5:30 spin class instead, or meet a friend for dinner. This really helped me taking the emotion out of the role. I don’t need to love this job I just need to have a job and make sure there are things outside of the role I love and do those more.
I can seee that and have been doing this (i am in a similar situation as op). But fake smiling (metaphorically), or pretending to car about you job takes a toll on you :/ How do you get to that point of not caring at all for 8 hours of your day, 5 days a week?
