I use to go to festivals as a little girl with my family but also lived in Tulsa, OK and the festival was on greenwood. So all the history that everyone discovered in recently I grew up knowing.
Same, not from OK but I grew up knowing about Juneteenth.
Asking ppl what they think about a holiday is an interesting position. I guess it’s like asking “what do you think about Kwanzaa” or “Ramadan”…
If the “revelation” of Juneteenth tells us anything it’s that schooling did not provide us with enough education on US history, there’s atoll so much to learn or re-learn.
A lot Black Americans grew up in regions that historically never celebrated Juneteenth. The traditions of the holiday are very regional. It is definitely a huge part of Black history but the specific customs are regional.
What's not to like about a celebration of freedom I’m glad it’s a federal holiday now. I'll be in LA for Kendrick's concert which I'm super excited for.
I haven't typically celebrated it much. Honestly I didnt' even know about it before 2020, is that when most of you found out about the holiday too? Or is it something that other families/communities have always celebrated?
I’m a Texan, I have celebrated all my life.
My town used to put on a fair/celebration that I went to growing up. I eventually moved to New England where they’d rather celebrate Columbus Day 🥴
I don’t but maybe I should start. Have an amazing time.
