I’d just take the new offer and move on. Doesn’t matter how much you like your colleagues, you have to do what’s best for your career. It doesn’t sounds like they value you. Staying because of a counter offer can de dicey. I’d be worried about hidden resentment. I’d rather be at place that pays employees what they are worth.
That is too big a gap. I’d take the new job if you can get it. I could see a counteroffer getting you like a 20% increase or something, but not doubling your salary. With in-house positions seems like the only way to get significant raises is to find a new job. Even if you were to succeed at getting a great counteroffer from your current job, I’d also be wary of being the highest paid person around, especially with recession on the horizon. I did too good a job negotiating for a high base when I had a lot of leverage (and got it) but promptly got laid off less than a year later when covid hit and they were looking to cut the most expensive employees who they felt weren’t adding sufficient value as compared to their pay.
I heard today that I’m going to get an offer. After talking with my mentor who was in my current bosses seat two years ago before starting a slow retirement, it sounds like my company may be willing to meet or beat an offer from another company. Even if it’s 2-2.5x the amount. My boss and the business side know I would leave a huge hole and knowledge gap that would take time and be expensive to fill. Thanks for weighing in.
I'm in a similar position. My company pays attorneys poorly to start, and due to wage compression my salary is low even for the company. I'm interviewing at a position that is literally 3x what I'm making now. I really love the work I'm doing and the team I'm on, but upper management has decided to purposely underfund legal, so I'm not feel bad leaving if I get the offer.
