First for your title purposes it depends on the firm. Some give partner in name to increase your billable rate expecting full sacrifice of time and life with little else as a benefit to you personally other than your salary, while others have balance and agreements that treat you like an actual partner to the firm including client development.
The concept generally involves having an understanding of case and client management both strategy wise and economically. To do this it is helpful to try to learn your firm’s operations including billables, collections, etc. and see how your work plays into the overall business operations.
Understanding the economics to resolve cases efficiently while maintaining client relationships is important and mostly learned by just doing it and/or potentially under the guidance of an already partner mentor. Managing client expectations and pushing for collection of outstanding bills in a democratic way is also beneficial in this role.
Ultimately high billables and collection rates makes you an asset. Depending on the firm’s admin restrictions you can run reports in the billing software to get an understanding of your firm’s operations and see what billable rates garner the highest return depending on the attorney, client, and area of law. Then from experience you learn what clients are trustworthy to pay or not.
Super general answer I know and is dependent on the specific practice area, plaintiff vs. defense, and the firm itself but hope that helps.

Equity partner in a boutique. My firm is a true partnership - we work as a team and work through issues together. I am primarily a service partner (think super senior associate) and supervisor/trainer for our division. I’m working on transitioning into more of a rainmaker role.
As far as traits to survive the job, you have to be able to deal with clients. They trust and rely on you, but rarely is that blind trust. Learn to trust and defend your associates. Learn to say no to your clients when they ask for ridiculous things. Learn how to handle their personalities. You become the person who clients look to for answers and accountability.
