From my experience unless you came in hot, winning awards every year, your are going to always lose the race for an American in the same position. For instance. If the company needs to make layoffs for instance and they have to decide between you and an american you’ll be the one getting the axed. That goes for promotions too.
You have to work twice as hard.
People judging your work based on your accent or not trusting you to present because of it.
People forcing you to assimilate in the office culture
Working extra hard to prove yourself (portfolio, written works) while some people literally just have their resumes
That wasn’t what we were discussing but ok. If you want to be the pinch hitter in those situations, that should absolutely be adoptable by your agency.
American sports. What are those?!?
You mean that weird sport that they run holding with an oval ball that somehow it’s called a football? And the championship it’s international but it’s played in America only?
Advertising is very cultural so initially when I didn’t get certain pop culture references or hadn’t seen certain shows they’d judge me. Now I don’t get that but I still get sort of
“exoticized”.
D1: it’s not fair to say it, nor is it even true.
Creative is about ideas, human insights and craft. Cultural references can be useful but are not essential. In fact, sometimes more original insights come from creatives with completely different cultural backgrounds because they have a different perspective.
For me it was “wait you’re not American” as soon as I’d hit them with my passport and losing the gig. (Struggles of a third culture kid who grew up with a very American background)
