Oh wow! That's pretty extreme, but probably a blessing in disguise if that's how that place operates. Mine's not actually work related, but my dog passed away and when I called out (and was noticeably crying), my boss said "Really? It's just a dog." I obviously wasn't in the best headspace, but I told him that I was only calling to take one day off, but now I won't be returning and hung up. Still don't regret it to this day.
100% it absolutely was a blessing in disguise, I am not at a company I love so much. Oh goodness I am so sorry to hear about your dog. Some people are heartless and do not realise how much animals become part of the family. Good for you for sticking to your guns!
I wished that it had gone better, but standing up for yourself is so important! Mine was when I discussed with a manager wanting to move forward at the company, they told me it wasn’t a good time, and all that. So I left it at that. A few months later, they disappeared! Not even sure what happened, but we got a new manager and I thought, well, let's talk to them. Not but a week later, they were putting me on things I wanted to do.
Absolutely, but like someone else said, it was 100% a blessing in disguise! Oh wow, that is a bit odd for them to disappear like that! So glad to hear though that it worked in your favour in the end.

A while back I was told to work with a person from a different team on a long project that would then be presented to a group of executives. We’d have a meeting and then split tasks in between meetings. Every single meeting, this person would come back having done only 5% of their tasks. I would then have to rush and scrape together all of their stuff in order to meet checkpoints.
I finally went to my manager, told her what was going on, and requested to do the project solo. Because at least then I could do everything without rushing all the time. We went that route, and I’ve never had to work with that person again
Ahh good for you! That's a really positive story, thank you. It is so hard with group tasks when clearly not everyone is putting in the same effort. I agree, they should not get the 'reward' if they barely contributed.
I worked at a startup for a while where I was the only woman, so you can guess how that went. I had no problem standing up for myself but the issue is that I was required to do it so often because there were so many problems that it just became too much and I shut down.
Oh goodness I am so sorry to hear that, that really does sound horrible. You can only stand up for yourself, everyday for so long! You shouldn't have to do it. I hope you are now in a place you love?
