I worked as the only data analyst for a small FinTech company…this may be too vague, but hope it helps …
Start by figuring out what you want to gain by building out product analytics. It’s usually to measure success of products.
Then figure out what metrics you will use.
From there , you need to find what data is available on these and how you can best format that data into insights (may need to build a couple dashboards - look into data visualization products).
If there hasn’t been a lot of data analytics before, you’ll likely have to circle back and step up the processes around what data is stored and how to set yourself up for better insights in the future.
I am in the exact same position for a role I started at a small software startup in the product team (I’m 5 days into my role)
I spent 3+ years in consulting on data warehousing teams and the last year at a later stage high growth SaaS company so I have a good idea of what a successful data org/data structure looks like. The data at my new company is a mess and I assume yours is too.
I agree with everything M1 said above. On top of that, I highly recommend that you work hard to manage expectations of what you’re able to deliver. Chances are they’re hungry for data now, so get them enough to keep them satisfied but try to keep low value ad-hoc requests pushed back so that you can focus bigger picture.
Work with data engineers to get your tables structured in a way for future analytics. Ideally you want to be able to accurately track the entire customer journey from the minute they join, to when they (hopefully don’t) churn. Finding a way to join product features and the customer lifecycle to revenue is enormously helpful too. Just having basics on signups, ARR from conversion, expansion/invites, downgrades and churns is good for understanding business impacts of product changes (assuming this is SaaS related)
