When I started my first internship I was so focussed on looking capable that I avoided asking questions. Later on I realised that the people who grew the fastest were the ones who asked questions early and often. What’s one thing that you wish you did differently when you first started out in your career?

If I was starting out now I'd try to get more involved with having mentors. I suppose that's a version of asking more questions. When I look back I realize I probably could have learned more and learned faster had I been more attuned to some of the people around me. It wasn't that I was entirely aloof, but I tended to be kind of shy and focused on my own work. I could have developed a better rapport with people in the organization.

I feel this as well. Having a mentor could have helped me hone in on exactly what I wanted to do in the finance field. I feel like instead I just kind of floundered and fell into my area.

I wish I hadn't worked so hard. I was so burnt out, so early on, that I missed out on opportunities because I was just so panicked about short term issues rather than giving myself enough breathing room to explore those new opportunities.

That is something I hear quite often actually. Never too late though to realise you need to put yourself first a bit more

I wish I set boundaries much sooner. I spent the first 5 or 6 years of my career working over 40 hours a week without additional pay since I am salaried. I thought it would help me advance in my career, but boy, I was so wrong. Set those boundaries early on, ladies!

Boundaries are soooo important. It took me a long time to learn that they were okay, and even respectable. Do grateful I developed these confidence in setting them.

I wish I wouldn't have been so loyal. I spent 6 years in my first role even though I started hating after 2 or 3. I should've left as soon as those feelings started to creep in instead of wasting even more time there.

Oh god that’s horrible. At least you can reflect on it now and learn from it !
