Keep it secret. It is none of your business.
Your colleague made a huge mistake by telling you about his leaving. The reason it was a mistake is that you are sitting here thinking about telling the boss. It is wise for people who are changing companies to keep their departure secret, even from so-called "friends," until it is appropriate to notify management.

Can you please mind your own business? What if that was you in his shoes?

The right thing to do is keep it to yourself. You're potentially screwing with this colleague's livelihood. Your manager could very well decide to let him go same day, which means he'd be going a month without a paycheck.

What would be your gain in letting the manager know? To be completely fair, the colleague should have kept it private to avoid putting anyone in that position to question what they should do.

The ONLY correct answer is to say nothing. They told you that in confidence. It is up to the company to deal with any fallout of losing the employee. They have done it many times before and they will handle it. Don't harm your coworker while also hurting your own reputation.
