For me - it was probably 6-12 months before I got put on a project with someone who really, really was focused on coaching their teams. Before then I bounced team to team and didn’t get much exposure to the entire process or why we were doing things. Flash forward many years and this person is going to be my partner sponsor.
This was super helpful!! Can you be my senior manager?

6-12 months is normal pre-Covid. Really hard to say after since 1) there are lot of departures at mgr level and these are the people who would be doing most of the teaching 2) remote learning is hard. It also depends on the candidate itself, obviously it helps to be proactive / intellectually curious about what we do. Having a strong accounting foundation is helpful too (you’d be surprised how frequently we see new hires with shaky foundations now that the audit experience has been watered down / outsourced to India / control focused)

Great point about “shaky foundations” due to outsourcing and emphasizing controls. I was in audit for one busy season and jumped to FDD partly because I was genuinely only learning controls (was staffed on a Fortune 20 client). So, can confirm from the other side of the table that your observation is spot on.
Honestly a solid year for myself. Who I learned from made all the difference. Don’t get discouraged and try to do your best to stay on teams with people who are willing to put in the work and teach you.

Weird that it took you so long. Was management aware?
2-3 months but i am the exception. Typically expect 3-4 full deals or 6 months on average.
