The purpose of time away from work is that it's supposed to be time away. The idea is that it's restorative and you come back refreshed and you're a better worker for it. So being off but still working essentially defeats the purpose. Obviously, people do it because they can't pull themselves away. But I genuinely believe when you're off you should be completely off.

Yes I agree, It’s a sucker for once you look at it when you’re away you then naturally become gravitated and in the mindset of work which doesn’t work with your detaching relaxing side.
We're a small office, but our unofficial protocol has worked great. We keep a large calendar in our breakroom and when we have days we want or need off, we jot them down so the team can see who wants off and when. That way if someone is planning a vacation, they can shift the dates to accommodate our work schedule if someone else is out. I think it actually encourages employees to take off when they need to and see there is enough coverage.

I like that idea, gives employees peace of mind that someone can pick something up if it is urgent.

I agree that your annual leave is a time to mentally be away from work as well as physically. Once you've replied to an email your still thinking about work after you've sent it. In an ideal world no one have have anything to do with work when they're off. However, it's not always possible. I think it should mostly affect those higher up the chain as they get paid more and you can't always have others doing some of the tasks that they do. They might be the only one qualified.

Yes I agree on both parts. I do understand that some people do keep an eye out due to them being higher management but it can also be easy to get too involved when your away and take away your chill time.
We do rota cover or share key tasks before someone goes. If there's no cover, that's a management issue, not a reason stay plugged in on holiday.

I like the idea of rota cover to something is always covered and it can be one less thing for an employee going on annual leave to think about.
