I’ve just done this but most of my clients are neither in my old city nor in my new city. Stayed with my firm.
I think you can form relationships in many different ways. I moved to a different state and stayed with the same firm about 9 months before COVID. It takes effort to keep us on business development but definitely doable.
As a recruiter I’ve worked with partners doing this and I think it’s easier now with Covid since location doesn’t really matter much and firms will believe your book is portable more.
It’s super hard but it can be done. I agree doing it now during covid is probably a benefit because people are realizing remote work makes it so you can be anywhere. Building a new network takes a longggg time.
Depends on your practice. Mine is national and transactional (my clients are all over) so wouldn’t matter where I’m located so long as I have internet and phone, and don’t mind the time differences.
If your clients are all in your current state and your practice involves that state’s law, would be much more difficult, but also not impossible either
Great responses. Thank you. I am very ambivalent about it. On the one hand I am really starting to gain traction with my business development as a very young partner and worry that relocating will make me start all over again. On the other hand, my wife will probably be working from home full-time for the foreseeable future and this Covid situation has made me question how much I will be in the office going forward and I do not really like the city that I am currently living in.
