I used to job hop a lot most of it was because I worked in mortgage lending during recession bur some of it was because I didn't want to put up with toxic work environment and constant stress o the point I felt physically ill. I then found current job where I thought I will stay here until I retire. I always gave it all, work from two or three people, working late evenings, holidays, during my vacation, went above and beyond my job responsibilities for 9 years. Now looking back.......
I commend you for doing this! It can be scary going into the ‘unknown’ But worth the risk. I hope you find what you deserve and are looking for very soon.
Firstly, thank you for sharing your experience it’s very helpful for us to understand we are not alone and when someone makes a post like this. Others who are experiencing the same thing can feel a sense of comfort. I also have been working in HR for 10 years and had a baby during Covid. I feel the same thing all the time my boss always takes my work and makes it seem like she did it. Unfortunately majority of these high level leaders are very toxic and the company won’t do anything about it.
It is both comforting and sad to see how many ppl can relate. This means that this is a common theme which should not be happening! I see you are in HR - our roles are extra disheartening because we can only do so much and when we see this happening we cannot do anything at all about it. I try to give leadership suggestions all of the time but it’s one big boys club - they don’t want to hear from the girl with 10 years exp and a moral compass lol never that!
I absolutely feel diminished. I am forever being told to stay in my lane. It is beyond frustrating. I have many years experience and could contribute much more than I am allowed to. Just yesterday my boss sent out something I did with a cover page showing THEIR name. I understand exactly what you are feeling. My situation goes far beyond this, ie a toxic work culture and hostile environment. I wish I had advice for you on how to handle it, but the truth is-WE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO!! Good luck to you. I hope everything works out for you.
It is very mixed messages! And you are right, we shouldn’t be trying to figure out how to handle these toxic environments/practices. I know my worth, and it is very frustrating being ignored and gaslit, daily.
I completely understand what you’re feeling.
This is a comfort, thank you❤️
I've had this happen many times, but as I've worked longer, I've learned the only way to stop it from happening is to call it out in the moment (you or an ally). When your work or idea is attributed to someone else, calmly say, actually, I did that or that was my idea. I brought it up at X time. The people getting credit for your work or idea will almost never correct the person giving them credit (at least in my personal experience), so you or a friend in the room/on the call *have* to call it out.
If that's the case, you need to leave. If normal behavior to correct a factually incorrect statement receives derision, you need to get out of there and away from that person.
I feel like this every single day. Almost 15 years at my job. I watch others take credit for everything I do. I have the most thankless job.
I can relate. I’m trying to focus my energy more on things and situations I can control. I also feel that is the ones who navigate office politics the best but are incompetent that are receiving the most praise. I refuse to be a robot!
Everyday!
It’s comforting to see others can relate. Sometimes I feel like I’m being too sensitive or imagining things!
Unfortunately I've had this experience in 90% of my jobs and all but 1 was in HR. A few were so bad as to get anything done I had to have a coworker say what was needed (I'd send them lists and talking points) because if I said it then it was a terrible idea but if they did it was genius.
It was either that or wait 2-3 yrs after I submitted the idea for my leaders to have the same brilliant idea that then also had 2-3 yrs worth of work to undo
I would make a list of accomplishments and then make a meeting with your supervisor. I suggest discussing that you have been doing all of this work but it doesn’t seem to be getting recognized so you are wondering if there are different things you should be working on. You are eager to keep advancing and would like to know if you are working in tasks that will help you meet yours and the businesses goals
Well good luck, keep evaluating where you are in life. Being miserable is not a good place to be and only you can decide to take the plunge. I made a huge career change 10 years ago and it was the best decision I ever made. I Make 3 x what my salary would have been after having to take a pay cut when I first moved.
May I ask what does it mean to you to be "acknowledged and appreciated"?
To be told occasionally,'great job,' or to be told in detail how an accomplishment I did not only was successful but greatly contributed to the company's mission. And being told 'Thank you.'
