Are any of you married but choosing not to have children? I’m in my late 30s, and while my partner and I appreciate our friends who are parents and like children just fine, we know child rearing is not for us. It seems like most people are either married with children, or simply not married and child free. Curious to see if there are other couples like us, and how common this is in a law firm setting.

It doesn’t matter - you don’t want kids then you shouldn’t have them! It’s that simple. Don’t bring kids into this world if you don’t genuinely want them. More money for adventures anyway. (I say as a pregnant person lol)

More specifically—don’t bring kids into this world if you don’t genuinely want to parent them.

Me!! We are very happy being cat parents who travel frequently. Most of my colleagues who are married have kids, are pregnant, or are trying to have kids but I’m very much set in my decision to stay child free.

Totally. I have kids but I have 4 close friends who do not and never intend to.

I had one, and now that I have one I cannot imagine what I would do if I lost them, BUT I can definitely imagine never having had one. Both lifestyles can yield great (or not great) lives. You must do what’s best for you. I don’t think people judge the childless the way they may have in the past. (Furthermore, you don’t have to decide until you age out, if you’re a woman. I had mine at 40, and I was definitely not alone in doing that.

I got lucky, and got pregnant right away, as did a couple of my friends, who also had babies in their late thirties/early forties. A lot of people do have trouble, though, so there are reasons for getting started a year or two earlier, if you really want to have your own. (Obviously adoption and fostering have higher age-out thresholds.) Ask your gyno. They can tell you what your hormonal levels are, and how nervous you should be.

My S.O. & I are not married, but we’ve been together 15 years. We don’t want to have children. There were a good number of childfree partners/counsel at my prior firm. I’m in-house now though & I’m definitely in the minority. Genuinely though, no one has ever cared. People make more comments about my marital status than they ever have about my being childfree.

Same experience: I get more comments about being unmarried in a very LTR than I do about not having kids.

Yep! We’re involved in our friends’ kids lives and our nieces and nephews, but prefer to give them back at the end of the day.

My firm has quite a few childfree partners and, oddly, my husband’s friend group is full of married people (15+ years) choosing to be childfree… it’s so many couple that it feels statistically unlikely for my husband to be close friends with this group. We’re having our first kid in a couple months and expected our friend group to withdraw from us, for any number of reasons but, for example, I don’t actually like other people’s kids and don’t expect anyone to like mine…the kid is not here yet, so TBD, but we’re planning not to let it ruin our lives or be the only thing we talk about.

All that to say, I fully support the childfree lifestyle and hope for myself that my childfree friends still like hanging out with me (and will do my best to still be a normal conversationalist).
