I have only ever received a Christmas bonus at one retail company, and it wasn't much. $150 one year and $250 the next year. It's a shame, because it's not like we make much in the first place, and a decent bonus would make such a difference. It's not like they can't afford it, they just don't care about us.
I make around that much every year in bonuses and I feel like we should get paid way more than we do. Sometimes it feels like a slap in the face but other times I am grateful to even be paid some type of bonus because other retailers companies do get bonuses.
For the most part, only management and above are going to get any meaningful bonuses.
Socialized Corporatism doesn’t allow for things like that much of at all these days.
You are just a cog in a giant mechanism that eats individuals alive & allows for psychopaths to flourish. If you & others don’t like it stand up against corporatism. FYI corporatism is fascism! We are all corporate socialists now. It is just called something else now so it sounds better. Good luck in slave world where most have no idea they are slaves!
Going above and beyond is noticed, but retail bonuses often depend on store performance or company policies, not just individual effort. That said, if you’re consistently contributing like you described, it’s worth asking about how bonuses or other recognition opportunities work at your place. Your expectation isn’t unreasonable, but retail can be slower to reward
You get no bonuses of any kind in a hospitality job, unless and rare that this happens, if you are in management (depending on company policy) as they hold more responsibility. Even getting a management role is hard and sometimes being good at what you do doesn't reward you nor the higher positions.
Only time I saw people got higher positions if they join somewhere else as a manager of some sort (even if they weren't before) where they couldn't get anyone else to join them nor find anyone else "good" enough (or just not interested enough in the position). it can be a internal thing as well – depending company policy.
You won't get much bonuses in hospitality, so just don't bother nor try to, unless they have a policy that they do or promote solely from within.
Most jobs do not give bonuses ever. You likely have a family member who is in a particular industry where that may happen. I’ve never known anyone to receive a bonus in any career.
In my experience, the only time I ever got a bonus was when I worked in banking. My last retail job was horrible. No recognition, the harder I worked, the more they demanded. No bonus, no monetary promotion. I held three positions there in the three years I worked there and I was lucky to get a .50 raise every year. But they are a billion dollar corporation going bankrupt and I do not feel bad at all. At the end they expected me to do the jobs of three people and when I was training two new guys, I find out they are starting $3 more an hour than I am!!!
Keep it up and you’ll get promoted but understand the system. They will work you like a dog especially if you’re good at what you do. I would single handedly meet the credit card goals for the month, I’m not braggin, I say this because I never received a bonus or even a thank you! I did find out that all those metrics, go to the store manager. So that’s who gets the credit and who gets the bonus and $50,000 more a year than you. That’s why I’m going to schlol. A little late in life but I’m over this industry.
