Are you expected to work on weekends or does it fluctuate based on the amount of work you have? My manager always says not to work on the weekends, yet I have to get my work done so weekend work can be essential. What’s your experience like?

If your manager says not to work weekends and you are then let them know. You either are inefficient during the week (or choose to leave early for fun weekday nights) or you have too much onyour plate.

True—thanks for the reply!

I work on weekends when I have deadlines I need to catch up on or when I need 100% uninterrupted focus time. If you earn overtime, and your manager says not to work weekends, then you certainly should not. If you’re exempt it shouldn’t be an issue. However, you should refrain from sending emails, especially to direct reports, on the weekend. Instead schedule them to be sent Monday morning. Your direct reports, or really anyone in your downline, could feel pressured to monitor emails and respond on the weekend if they see you are working and sending them.

Very true! I hadn’t thought of this before.

I try not to work on weekends unless it’s absolutely necessary. My team also encourages us to fully disassociate with work when it’s the weekend or we are on PTO.

That’s great! I’m glad not all workplaces are overly demanding :)

Listen to your manager. I almost never work on weekends, and it is asked of my direct reports maybe once a year. I would have an honest conversation with your manager about your workload and see if they have any advice.

Great points—thanks!

My family and I have been looking to move to an island. My spouse works remote and can relocate at any time. My firm has an office on said island, but they don’t pay me enough to live there. I would have to ask for a raise and to be relocated. I love my firm and the Partners that I work for, but I’m thinking of applying to other places that offer a more livable salary for the location. Would you just talk to the Partners at your current firm or look elsewhere?

Curious what’s a fair salary in MA? Was just told that there is likely not going to be a chance for a raise during my upcoming performance review due to my salary already being “above average for the industry” based on my employer’s questionable research. I’ve been with the company 8.5 years & am the only one in my role, which they can’t operate without. I execute tasks from two investment advisors and two financial planners - they make the decisions of what should happen & I make it happen.

I have an offer and want to negotiate

1. London base salary but I have to absorb all the expenses (train + stay)
I am thinking to negotiate to

2. home base salary and have my expenses paid for

I know that's depends on the amount I have to travel (and potentially stay) but at the moment this is unknown. Past 8 months was just twice a month + 2 nights stay.

The only thing I know is it won't be every week, the return trian ticket is about £80-100, depends I could plan ahead.

Currently a Wealth Advisor for Citi but I honestly hate it here with a passion it’s the worst company I’ve ever worked for in my life and I’ve been in Wealth Management in the banking channel for over a decade. Series 7, Series 63, Life, CFP, ChFC, and soon to have my MBA with a focus in Mergers & Acquisitions. I’m look to enter another area of Finance at this point instead of starting over somewhere else from scratch, but not sure what direction to go. Interested in Investment Banking or M&A.
