I started investment banking at 30. Early on, I found myself comparing my career path to others in their early 20s. it's hard not to in this industry, where timelines matter and people constantly track who made associate in two years, VP in three, and so on.
But careers are long. Over time, I realized I enjoyed different things. While I do like banking, it's not the only way to make money or to feel fulfilled. I’ve learned that my happiness doesn’t come solely from how quickly I move up. It depends more on where I’m working, what my day-to-day looks like, who I’m working with, and what I’m doing outside of work. Now I find myself in a place where I earn well and can enjoy things outside of work which makes me happy.
Started banking at 32 in a bit of an unexpected way (no MBA) at associate level. Left at 34 for corp dev. Best decision for me and for my long term career. IB is great. But not for everyone.
Please also don’t compare your career to others. You got what? Another 35 yrs to work and grow? Perhaps another 50+ if you’re the Buffett or Donald Trump type?
If you’re in IB, save your money and invest it in a business or something. That’ll make you way happier.
Can I dm you how you got into IB at associate level with no mba? Curious what you did previously
