Would I like to? Yes. Does it happen? No. Businesses will "encourage" recruiters or hiring managers to keep silent unless the asking amount is too high.

I get your point , that dynamic definitely exists in many organizations. The short-term logic is to protect leverage, but I’ve also seen how that can create long-term trust issues if candidates later realize they anchored too low. From your experience, is this mainly driven by cost control pressures, or just an old negotiation culture that hasn’t caught up with today’s expectations?
I would love if all candidates knew to do that. It is our job to get the best employees for the least cost possible, so we aren't going to volunteer that information.

Thank you for your honesty, I appreciate the insight.
I understand the cost side of hiring, but when ranges aren’t shared, strong candidates can unintentionally price themselves below what’s approved. That first number really does set the tone.
Do you think being more transparent upfront could actually help attract and retain better talent?
In Massachusetts, we are required to have the range posted on every listing and required to give the range to any employee seeking promotion or position transfer,
Honestly, most candidates don't even acknowledge the range posted. Being a small family-owned business, is difficult with the high cost of living here. We aren't able to pay as much as the big names in the area and that tends to cause a lot of turnovers or offer rejection all together.
