As a single parent working in government, I find the work-life balance fantastic—especially compared to my last private sector job, where I was pulling 60-hour weeks. The set schedules, paid leave, and remote work options have been a game changer. But I feel like I could be taking better advantage of certain benefits, like childcare assistance or flex scheduling. For those juggling parenting and a government career, what benefits have helped you the most? Any tips on making the most of these perks to make family life even smoother?

Government benefits are amazing, but a lot of employees don’t maximize them. I’ve seen coworkers complain about childcare costs while ignoring subsidies they qualify for. Dig into HR’s handbook, ask about local programs, and don’t assume all benefits are obvious. You’d be surprised how many hidden perks exist if you take the time to research.

One of the best perks I’ve taken advantage of as a parent is flexible scheduling. My agency allows compressed workweeks, so I do 10-hour days and get every other Friday off, which is huge for childcare and appointments. Also, don’t sleep on dependent care FSA benefits—pre-tax dollars for daycare can save you a ton. If your agency offers remote work, use it strategically to avoid commutes on high-stress days.

My LWD with TCS is 10 June, I currently hold a offer of Cognizant of 18.3LPA and promise to send me at Onsite within 6 months, apart from this I have offer from TalentCafeSolution- Client JC Penny(26.85 Fixed), Infocepts (26.5LPA, 5% variable), Nice Software Solutions(25.98LPA,10% variable) , ACS Solutions(26LPA,5%), Allianz(25LPA). I am confused which should I select, trusting Cognizant and joining on less or going for one the company mentioned above.

Any thoughts on what I could ask for at end of year reviews for a salary increase?

Graduated in 2020, wanted to be a graphic designer, took a job at a startup in a social media role. The boss called me the "r" word for not handling entire 13-ish accounts roster well by myself. I quit. Found a role as social media specialist. Realized (again) that I hate social media. Moved to in-house mktg manager, only to be a glorified graphic designer / someone to call the city to cut down trees. I job hopped too much, I feel my portfolio is empty. How do I restart again? I feel defeated.
