Look at it like this: they wanted to find a way to keep you; it may be beneath you, but at least they didn't try to break the law.
I would do the work while Recovering/recalibrating for the next 8 to 12 months from the birth and THEN start hunting for a new role
That sucks, I’m sorry. If the whole team was dismantled and it wasn’t just your position that was eliminated, I wouldn’t take it too personally. If you like the company, can you work with your manager to try to find another position that aligns better with your career path and doesn’t feel like a step backwards? Looking externally is always a great option as well, I would suggest leaving your higher position on your resume and not updating it to reflect your new stepped down position.
First of all, congratulations on having your baby! It’s obvious that they still value you and understand that some of these decisions are made at the macro level, so I wouldn’t take it personally nor make it about my ego (easier said than done I know). There’s a reason why you had the higher role before and with those same qualifications and talent you can absolutely pivot somewhere else within your same organization, utilizing your network. I would adjust into your “current normal” for a bit and then start conversations with key leaders in departments you’re interested in internally. Give yourself a timeframe of 6-8 months to jump to a different role that you think would be a better fit.
“Career Causalities” happen all the time during re-organizations and it’s all done in the spirit of the greater good of the organization. If your current role is pretty comfortable to you, I would use it to your advantage since you just had a baby and don’t need added stress with a brand new role. Make a plan, and don’t settle with roles being chosen for you. You’re the CEO of your own career, so you can absolutely start conversations now and looking into desired areas. I’m emphasizing the internal movement mainly due to the state of the job market at this time and since external roles do introduce a lot more stress and change when you have a baby.
