Is there any logic in expecting lawyers to be glued to their seats when there are no deals/matters on? I don’t understand why law firms haven’t adopted the consulting model...

Not completely. There are reasonable limits (e.g. you need to be able to get into the office within 30minutes), but outside of that you can do as you please when you aren’t resourced on a project.

It makes no sense to work 2-3 months past 10pm and then sit at your desk 9-5 doing nothing when you finally get a slower week.

What is the consulting matter? Is it completely “come as needed?”

We’re not involved in one massive project. I have lots of deals going on various time lines, so there’s always work to do. Every day is a constant triage so the slow weeks you describe is an opportunity to catch up on less urgent matters.

You can’t speak for every lawyer. I’ve had pretty much nothing on all January as my partners have been on leave.

What firm is this? Generally if you’re making your hours at the end of the month, you’re free to peace out at 2PM on a Friday if there is nothing going on

Junior associate here (2L). Got some ‘constructive feedback’ from a 4L. We went over budget on a matter, and 4L thinks it has something to do with my inefficient delegation to 0Ls (and not the all the out of scope work the client asked us to do but doesn’t want to pay for...). Delegated tasks included basic grunt work like splitting out documents, preparing execution versions and other low-level tasks. 4L asked me to check with them before I delegate anything in the future. Thoughts?
