Can I just complain about how difficult it is to buy gifts for my wife? Every time I’ve tried to be thoughtful, she doesn’t seem to be impressed. But when I try to get her something form her “lists” the items are garbage $15 gifts, stuff that’s been on the list for years that she really doesn’t care about, or anything $100+ she says “don’t get it if it’s not on sale, just give me a gift card for the same amount.” I know she’s giving me an out, but I doesn’t feel like a sincere gift.

Ditto. Exactly the same situation like that. Buys her flowers - she complained why waste money coz it’ll get thrown away anyway. But clothes and accessories- not her taste or too expensive and such. Only want on sales cheap item but nothing satisfies her.

After years of not getting appreciated and tells me she doesn’t need anything, I stopped trying. Nowadays, she’s just complaining why I don’t get her gifts anymore.

We don’t do gifts anymore, we just do nice meals or a staycation instead. She buys what she wants throughout the year, and I do the same for myself (to a lesser extent.)

My wife is the same, and I came from a family of "big gift" = special and had to adapt to a norm of small / no gifts.

Take her guidance and make it special - get the cheap gift she wants, but then also get a greeting card and write a thoughtful note, bake her something nice from scratch, and plan a relaxing and pampered day.

Amen to this OP. No winning for me when buying for my wife. It’s gotten to the point where I tell her to literally tell me what to get her. Surprisingly, that seems to have fixed the problem
