Can I just get some encouragement? I had a rough year where I had to take a lot of interruption in my days to go to vet appointments etc. I did a 7 day workshop my firm wanted me to do and I was so sick for 1 week I was almost hospitalized (94 hrs off). Had to stop ADD meds for medical reasons and struggle to focus/bill work. If I end 172 hours behind goal can I bounce back? It was the only negative in my performance review today at a very large ID firm, but they said I appear uncommitted.

You can bounce back if you believe you can. I would ask to talk to a trusted mentor and explain that you’ve just had a very rough year due to a myriad of reasons, but you are committed to the job. Then ask for advice on how to demonstrate your commitment, especially when life issues are getting in the way? This should show you’re proactively trying to correct course, buy some good will and buy-in from your mentor to help advocate for you, and actually get you some actionable steps.

I am so sorry OP. Life is definitely much harder now for people just starting off than it was when I was that age, which was only 10-15 years ago. Prices are insane on everything from housing to groceries. It’s really not you - it’s just hard out there these days.

I've heard ID work is a lot tougher to make hours so you might consider lateral options to a firm or practice where more of your hours worked can be billed/collected. It doesn't mean you can't handle private practice but maybe this area isn't for you.

like

It is. Those who are high billers are double billing (know this because it’s the only advice I’ve been given when I worked in ID). Those who love diving deep into substantive legal work struggle because they’re not playing the ID game of churning and burning.

Billing is difficult if you have adhd but it’s even harder when things are chaotic with work, and almost impossible when work and life are chaotic. I feel your struggle and feel similar doubts about private practice or any job that has rigid billable rules—especially if your substantive work is fine.

This makes me feel so much better! My substantive work is great. That's what was so hard to hear. They said I'm a fantastic lawyer, smart, write exceptional briefs, clients love me, everyone loves working with me. They had to come up with 3 negatives for the form so they dropped down "billing" for all 3. If I bill 10 hours a day from now through 12/31 including weekends I can make it. If I can do it physically.

I can guarantee you that 90% of the male attorneys have not reached their billable goal either. I can also guarantee that even with your time away, you've billed more than 70% of those attorneys as well. Any feedback is a ploy to keep you overstretching yourself to make the machine more money. Focus on your work quality and outside connections.

You can bounce back. You are clearly a resilient person to be working a demanding job when you had all of that going on. I am sorry you had such a tough year. That is objectively a LOT to deal with. I'm sure it felt impossible and you still showed up for work, for your pet, and for yourself to make sure every issue got the attention it needed. Hang in there.

While most teachers are protected by teacher unions, I feel my voice hasn’t been heard at all with my concerns of going back to school next week. Our diocese has decided on full return 5 days/ week for all 42 schools despite a recent increase in COVID in our communities. Every other school that I know of in my state is either choosing remote learning to start the year or a hybrid approach, yet that was not an option for us. Are other Catholic schools I. Any tips on leaving a firm “correctly”? Was about to go “of counsel” with my firm of 6 years, but then another firm whose partners I really respect (and personally like) offered me a partnership position. I predict my current bosses will *flip* (cut off file access immediately, try to beat me to calling my clients, etc.), so how do I set myself up for a successful transition?

Questions about job hopping-
My average tenure at a company is ~1.5 years (with ~11 YOE), but each jump I've made has yielded progressive/tangible career growth.

I'm concerned after my most recent jump (went from a product director to a head of product position at a different, smaller company after only a year) that I've kind of poisoned future career prospects at larger companies.

Any insights on whether this type of job hopping is a complete deal breaker for potential HMs?
