I would suggest rather than Alto go with slightly better hatchback like WagonR or Celerio or Tiago... The reason I say this is becoz if this is going to be your primary car for some time then you'll end up taking it out on highways from time to time and in my personal opinion Alto is not a good car on highways... And when buying a car my personal philosophy is that buy that car which will fulfill your future needs rather than current... It will be a stretch on your budget but better than regretting later
I would suggest to increase the budget slightly and go for celerio or Swift. They are much better in terms features and driveability.
i10 is a great product from Hyundai of you want a hassle free ownership and good features but if you want lesser running cost then maruti hatchbacks are good

i10 would be between celerio and Swift, with Swift on top. Swift is more spacious. But i10 comes with more features. Swift can be good for drivability. But overall i10 is a better pick and would be my personal choice for just the two of you.

Go for Tiago, best budget car with top security and comes with decent accessories in top end. Even Mid level is also worth. Take test drive and decide.
Try to Get any automatic used hatchback car with airbags preferably not more than 5 years old.
