When they quickly involve other people to validate their lie or try to get other people to believe them, I find that highly suspicious. Also someone who lies doesn't like follow up questions. They hope you'll just accept the lie and leave it there. When you don't, and they have to think on their feet to expand on the lie, most just get frustrated and accuse you of not trusting them. I've been gullible so many times though, until I started paying attention.
I'm good at sniffing things out for the most part. If something doesn't sound quite right to me, I'll explore it and try to find out why that is by asking follow up questions. If someone is lying, this usually proves it - "A liar has to remember his lies and who he told them to. An honest man just has to tell what happened."
