Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

Paypal Hello, I've been offered Data engineer /Software Engineer at PayPal, india.
How's the company doing, is it profitable? Bit skeptical about the recent layoffs at PayPal.
Any data engineers at PayPal around? Whats your thoughts, how's the team doing and how would be the growth?

TC seems to be a lowball, but that's their budget, no scope of negotiation.

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

When I got laid off, I would always say a mix of # 3 and 4. Its a good way to transition into an area of law that you’ve wanted to get into.
Neurally? I would say your neural synapses were not firing often enough for the managing partner.

Not the right time to make typo jokes.

Just say the firm wasn’t a good fit. We’re all allowed a redo.

Probably not much. Hiring attorneys, for right or wrong, always assume that a gap in employment is involuntary. Only if asked, I’d say that your group had a sustained slow down and a number of associates were subject to an involuntary reduction in force. Most of us know that departments are especially streaky with their workflow over the past two years.
Note that this explanation will not work if you happen to be in a department that is known to be busy (Kirkland M&A, DPW Cap Markets, etc.).

Is it possible not to mention it was a layoff?

I would say that you were billing a ton and were burnt out, so you took time to recalibrate.

So I am not laid off, just speaking hypothetically in the future. I asked my firm about references and they can only say neutral things like the timeframe I worked. That’s honestly what I needed to hear because I was worried that they could say more. For example, that my hours were low.

Firms wouldn’t say anything other than whether you were employed and the dates of employment. they won’t want to get sued.
