Superwings
This south Korean production is the only cartoon that my 5 years old daughter and my 3 years old son can agree on, with two seasons streaming on Netflix. For those lucky individuals who have not yet been exposed to the adventures of Jet, this show is about a package delivery company plagued by blatant inefficiencies. Their entire operation is an exercise in poor asset management, lack of any basic operational discipline, inability to monetize services delivered and scope of work, and a deep-rooted complacency that prevents the organization from avoiding the same mistakes over and over. All of this results in clear underleverage of their proprietary amazing robotic technology that allows driverless delivery. Specific issues include:
· the route manager Jimbo has clearly minimal experience in route optimization: in every episode he sends Jet (a driverless airplane who can assume human appearances to improve customer experience) out with just one package to deliver to some random country; the issue is only compounded in season 2 when he goes on sabbatical and leaves his job to his niece who seems to be just a teenager without any real experience in the distribution business
· Upon delivery of the package, instead of getting back to its route, Jets invariably goes native and gets involved in some highly inefficient activities like chasing kites, tracking pandas, etc. There doesn't seem to be any kind of consequence for this highly questionable behaviors
· While on these unproductive detours, Jet over and over gets in trouble and calls the route dispatching office. Instead of owning his avoidable mistakes, he calls for help. And of course Jimbo deploys some assets to go save the situation with complete disregard of incremental fuel costs or opportunity cost (to be honest, they all seem fairly unutilized to begin with)
· In all of this fire-fighting and re-scoping, there is never a discussion with the customer about additional fees or even a recognition of the investment required to deliver against some very tall order issues well beyond typical delivery services (for instance, fighting some aliens) – so that it can later be used to drive contractual negotiation.
Then you wonder why people grow to run inefficient organizations.
