46 female here - single, love Austin and live in one of the classic historic neighborhoods close to downtown. I love it. My neighborhood has an amazing sense of community - I have met at least 60+ female neighbors age 30 to 70 in the past year alone as a neighbor who loves hosting gatherings and mahjong. She taught many of us , brings us together and we all do spinoffs as well. Some take it seriously some don’t. We have many small group friend gatherings like hikes, dog walks, dancing, some go to deep eddy for a swim, some do Spanish classes together. It is a total throwback. Beyond that group - meetup and sweat pals, pickleball, camping, pickup social sports are great ways to build friends and community. People are really approachable in my neighborhood - I likely know at least 200 of my other neighbors through my dogs and daily walk banter - many who have become friends. Great restaurants, grocery stores are walkable, housing options are diverse, I could go on … fee free to DM me if you want more insight.
** note: I would recommend select neighborhoods in Austin near downtown town - noting outside of historic core central Austin***
I have lived in Venice Beach, Santa Monica, NYC, San Fran, London in my past.
Thank you! I am planning a visit in June to look at places! Don’t want to sign a yearly lease without seeing the place!
I think you'd have a much better time in Austin! My situation is a little different, as I am 24 and male, but I've been able to build a great community here doing things like volleyball, soccer, two stepping, etc. People are very friendly here and it's so easy to meet people just going to Zilker and playing pickup, for example.
There's also a lot of nature and places to go hiking and swimming. I would say the people here are pretty active, so it feeds into that well. I think it could be a lot of fun for you and your dog!
To add to my point above and echo Accenture 1 - I was welcomed with open arms by a coed sports team at the age of 45 that had a range of people playing the sport from age 20 to 60+. Some were ex college athletes on other sports, some people just wanted exercise, some competed at top NCAA contenders like myself. I met so many different people of all ages through that one hobby alone. We have spinoff Friday evening 1 mile runs and swims in Barton springs, happy hours, etc
Go to Austin. More to do Dallas is great if you have a family.
Sorry I was driving when I did this. My recommendation is Austin based on what you said. Dallas is great if you have a family as there are more family friendly things around DFW.
If you like LA but feel like it needs less beaches and more churches then go to Dallas.
Oops. Not really religious but after 8 years in LA, am ready for a change
I love all of this!
I like both Austin and Dallas personally so don't really see an issue with either, but moving from LA to TX is going to be a weather shock. Lots of people move here and last 1-2 summers then move elsewhere. I am from CA originally and love Texas (have lived here 8 years) but don't expect it not to be pretty difficult for a few months out of the year. Walking the dog early AM or very late at night is never ideal but I wont take my guy out around the neighborhood if its above 90.
Thank you! I appreciate the insight! That ‘s why I am looking for a place with a yard but totally understand. I work from home so luckily I will have some flexibility
Austin is awful for single women (speaking as a 40 something yo who left Austin after 25 years). It's a super small dating pool for women 40+, even smaller if you're not a size 2.
Thank you, I appreciate the perspective. Can I ask where you moved to. Totally familiar with Peter Pan syndrome, as we got plenty of those in LA too. At this point, I think my priority is to find more of a community. I could sense that in Austin and that is why I will most probably try that first .
