Yes. If you’re young I suggest you pivot to something else. I would have if I knew better in my 20s and 30s. Even in my 30s I knew where the industry as a whole was headed. But it’s hard to let go of a career you’ve invested so much into. And what we do requires a good dose of passion.
It’s more than AI, it’s a cultural shift that good creatives have been working against from my experience. Also, nepotism has saturated the market, perhaps this has always been the case. But I see these professionals survive the longest with far less talent to reflect tenure or promotion. Every agency environment I’ve been in. It’s not just our industry. I’ve seen a good amount of it over the past 20 years everywhere I’ve been.
In an already competitive industry there’s even less opportunity. And I’d argue that it sucks up so much of your time as a young professional that you won’t get back. I used to think of it as paying dues but it’s exploitive and more about the political game. And when creative is so devalued what are you actually contributing outside of your long hours and ability to work the software. And with AI, who needs that software expert and even if the execution lacks soul or inspires people to think beyond expectations, good enough is good enough for now.
Similar story. About 7 yrs in, ACD at a reputable NY ad agency, did well for a few years there till the politics got bad - I spoke up against pigeon holing a Latina copywriter to write in Spanish when we hired her to write in English and she expressed in her interview solely being an English writer. I was polite and respectful when expressing support for this young copywriter. - 30 min later I was on a PIP.
My experience with politics everywhere after this happened was just as ridiculous. It’s no wonder there are so many bad Creative Directors and leaders. If you’re lucky enough to work with good ones, really consider not quitting ever.
And if you’re not building your portfolio with solid case studies, that could be a reason consider another place even if it’s toxic. But if it were me, thirty something I’d pick a new career geared towards stability and work/life balance. Write a book, poems or music that touches people. Seek out clients and freelance work you enjoy doing to build strong case studies and relationships.
If you’re not tied down, travel and find work abroad. Life’s short. I’m 43. Good luck to you.
every generation has thought this, yet humanity persists!
I like to think so. I’m just not optimistic about the advertising business. And we’ve never seen such a gung-ho effort across industries to replace as much of the workforce as possible.
Even before AI, creativity and what agencies do for clients had been significantly devalued.
Sorry for not actually swearing btw, I think fishbowl gets mad when you do that.
I assume there was a time when people thought Photoshop was the asteroid to our dinosaurs and were still clapping cheeks, so I think we’ll be ight. I think it’s more of an exercise in Darwinism, adapt or be App’d this time around
Yeah but were they not hiring junior and midlevel talent and trying to replace them with photoshop?

So I should just go get a masters in finance?
AI is just as likely to take that
