Never had a manager do that for me. Every opportunity I've gotten was because I raised my hand or went looking for it myself. That's the reality for a lot of people. Not every manager is a mentor. If yours isn't the type to go opening doors for you, you need to start taking the initiative yourself. Ask for the meeting, pitch yourself for the project, volunteer to run point on something no one else wants to do. Visibility matters. From the sound of it, you need to start creating your own.

Yes. Proactive about our own success. Everyone else is thinking about themselves or who would make THEM look good because the other person is doing so well.
The other way is to just be so undeniably good
I had a manager once who pushed me into a client presentation I felt way underqualified for, and that exposure changed everything. To advocate for yourself, I’d be explicit: “I’m ready for more; here are the kinds of rooms and projects I’d love to be in. What would it take to get there?”

That is an amazing question. I am going to ask that. How did your manager push you to present? How did you prepare?

I’ve seen this done for someone to the point where I questioned if this person was an industry plant. It felt very unfair because this person had all things equal with me except the relationship with this certain manager. Sometimes it just takes a special connection.
I haven’t had this yet. But I just show up 200% and I notice it’s built more trust and more opportunities for me. But nothing dramatic right away.
