Do you think STAR questions are the way to go? I understand the concept that past behaviour is likely to predict future behaviour, but this really doesn't capture the true potential of the candidate. Plus, I know for a fact that half of the answers are made up. And sure, there needs to be some past experience to draw inspiration from, even if it was to cook up an answer, but I'm always only half-impressed by a good answer to a STAR question. How do the rest of you feel about this?

Personally, I supplement STAR questions with forward-looking prompts and scenario-based questions to capture how someone might handle unique job challenges. I find this gives a more well-rounded view than STAR questions alone.

i like this approach!

I honestly feel the same as you, especially now that everyone preps for interviews by looking up STAR method prompts. I think the questions are forced and so the answers are too. I prefer theoretical questions that help me see how someone thinks through an issue or problem rather than just a memory of something.

i agree! I think it's valuable to understand the candidate's thought process vs just a previous story

Has anyone who's worked in HR, Finance, or another role with visibility to compensation information been able to use that as leverage for salary negotiations?

To put it bluntly, I know certain people with less experience and a lower performance rating are getting paid more than me due to my role working with payroll data. I suspect this was due to the fact that I did not counter offer when I accepted this role, which was a few months ago, and now I regret it.

I have 15 years of supply chain experience, transportation and freight forwarding. I also have an MBA. Would like a hybrid, or remote but open to anything.
