He clearly trusts you so I'd be happy about being able to help him and be in good books for a possible promotion. You don’t have to challenge whether the emergency is real; you can keep it about what you can and can’t do. You could say “Hey, I’m happy to help keep things moving, but people are asking me questions and making decisions that are above my pay grade. Can you either give me clear guidelines or name someone else as point person for the things I shouldn’t touch?” That way you’re not kicking him while he’s “down,” but you’re also not silently taking on a role you’re not paid, trained, or comfortable doing.

I would take it as a growth opportunity. If you do well, you can point it out and hopefully this will lead to a promotion. Otherwise you can add it to your resume for the next step!
I have, and I wore it like a badge of honor. They don't typically trust just anyone to stand in for the boss. I would take it as a compliment and show them what you are made of.
Just let it roll off. If this truly bothers you, then start looking for another job.Things will not change in that regard. Some managers do that.
And some managers are testing you to see what you are made of and how much you can do without any hand holding. Just sayin. Could be leading to something better. So rather than quit, accept the challenge and then reevaluate. 😊
This is an amazing opportunity for growth! The fact that he trusted you with this position means he knows you can do this. Take the initiative to learn the answers you don't have and learn new skills. Taking this kind of initiative will show that you are truly a team player who is committed to the job and determined to do your best. It also opens the door to being a manager yourself which typically comes with a pay increase and sometimes better benefits.
Communication, taking initiative, being adaptable and flexible along with being reliable in a pinch are all important skills to have and look great on your resume should you apply for another job in the future. :)
My advice to you is that you need to take this opportunity to show him what you really can do. This sounds like a test to me but only because this happened to me several times. He may be opening you up to something greater. My own opinion. Good luck!
If you want to remain at a position both mentally and physically where you feel you are comfortable at and wish not to grow even when reduction in force indicates those that take on and without hesitation or complaint see who will and can be let go.
