Faced a dilemma at work today—there’s a policy we’re required to enforce that directly contradicts what our community is clearly asking for. As someone in a public-facing role, I’m torn between doing my job and doing what feels right. I know we’re supposed to be neutral, but it’s frustrating when the rules feel out of touch with the people we serve. For those of you who've been in similar situations, how do you advocate for change within the system? Is it even possible, or do you just have to wait it out?

Government employees are way too passive. If we don’t speak up and challenge bad policies from the inside, who will? Playing it safe just keeps the status quo alive.

Kind of hard to respond without more context on the situation. I have seen policies that didn’t make sense on the surface, but did when you actually looked more into it. Not to say that is the case for everything, but take it into consideration. Give the community the tools and knowledge to change if it is necessary.

We aren’t supposed to be neutral, we are supposed to serve the community. Kinda hard to give advice without more context cause we also have to pick our battles unfortunately. If you have enough power to wield then it’s worth challenging internal policies that seem contradictory.

I’ve seen way too many dept directors be cozy with industry power brokers and dismiss the concerns of community groups and it’s infuriating to watch. It also makes me appreciate the dept directors who have boundaries with undue influence that much more.
