I was passed over for partner but will make of counsel at a V50 firm. I’ve put in the work to make partner, but the firm is making very few this year (less than 10). Am I wrong to feel disrespected?

This situation usually results either from questions about your business case and ability to generate the work to support yourself or factors you have no ability to control, such as a glut of people on your practice area this year or in next year’s. Have you been given any reason?

And do take the time to pat yourself on the back and enjoy the moment even though it’s not exactly what you want. It’s an important milestone and significant achievement.

Also, you don’t have to pay estimated taxes. Rejoice!

Are there people in or around your seniority level who were not promoted? How many? Do you think they are in line for one of the <10 partnership spots? Or are they likely just out now?

That’s a silver lining if ever I heard of one!

Haven’t been in this situation yet, (just a 4th year) but for me the key question would be- do you still respect/ trust your firm? If no, then leave and find somewhere that values you as much as you value it, if yes (and as you have expressed there are opportunities to make partner still) stay a bit longer- after all life is long- but trust in the business you are entering into is essential.

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

Do companies sometimes offer "gifts of appreciation" if you're not selected for a merit increase? My manager randomly called me to let me know I was chosen for the "gift" this year bc of my "hard work & dedication", except now I'm learning other colleagues are receiving actual merits.
I mean it's possible that I may receive a merit, but I feel like I won't considering my manager never brought it up & the dept update made it sound like those receiving it should know by now.

There are a lot of UX educational programs out there, some very new, e.g. Dribbble, and costs are all over the place - General Assembly is $15k (and full-time), CareerFoundry almost $8k, and then many others at a fraction of the price. Reviews also vary wildly. Are these more expensive programs worth the huge increase in cost?
