Trying to get life back on track. Send love pls🥺🥺
I started working for my company about 6 weeks ago and I was originally hired to work from a specific location closer to my home. I was told the 1st day of my employment that the location “is not ready yet” and that I would be working out of a temp location further from my home. It has been really inconvenient for me to say the very least and the remote option is unavailable to me until after the probation period which is 6 months. How should I approach having this conversation with my director?

What’s a retreat? At my office, we just “retreat” into the break room and eat lunch. Real talk tho: we usually do an office group lunch with games and prizes or something once a month, and we throw a massive end of year/Christmas party. Then we close the office for a week (beyond the typical closed for Christmas days)
@A12, mountain west region, large city.
Around 450 attys, firmwide retreat once a year at a really nice resort. Programming in the day, dinners and socializing at night. There’s also a spa/golf activity option on one of the afternoons. 2 1/2 days, 2 nights. It’s a really great event every year that I genuinely enjoy and look forward to.

And
Firm retreat? When did that become a thing?
I would hate an event like this and never go.
500+ and we don’t have one
50 attorneys, 2 day weekend trip to a major city 2hrs away. Individual rooms at a high end hotel, spent 8-5 on Sat in sessions with a facilitator (retreat was dedicated to firm growth and structure), then a cocktail party followed by best steaks in the city and lots of drinking. Sunday was a heavy breakfast followed by sessions from 9-1 and then travel home.
1000+ and don’t have one
400+ attorneys, 3 days/2 nights in a groovy town/awesome resort in the state
2,000+, group-specific, pre-Covid alternated between domestic and a Europe retreat. State of the group, industry status/hot topics, and then dinners etc
1000+, alternating one year just for associates in our office, one year for associates in our state together. Pre COVID they used to do national retreats for certain class years but haven't heard any discussion of that making a come-back. Usually a thursday-friday situation with option to stay the weekend

Drinking whiskey 🥃 or an IPA and grilling on my deck, smelling cut grass and listening to music in relative solitude without my phone or kids for just a brief moment away from constant and unrelenting stress and existential dread over every case or bill or chore that can’t be attended to fast enough for someone else’s liking. That’s the only real retreat I get
Singing a country song... soft and low
Sometimes we walk over to a bar and have a beer. We all enjoy the beer. We go home to our families who are happy we're not on retreat.
Families are invited to our retreat
Over 2,000, so each practice group does one. My group does a 2-3 day even with a "state of the group" talk plus a bunch of little informational seminars and nice dinners/happy hours.
900 lawyers, one weekend per year, a different city where we have an office every year.
Fly in Friday, fly out Sunday. Good fun for the most part.
1000 and only one in NY headquarters a year but only for senior associates aboht to become partner
40ish, 4 hour presentation in a rented out room with catered lunch followed by reception/dinner/drinks at a partner’s nice house
My old firm was 1,600+ and did an all-firm retreat that included associates every other year. The entire retreat consisted of back-to-back panel series at a conference center for like 2-3 days.
About 200 attorneys and we do one every 6 months. Long weekend, programming during the day and social events/dinners in the evening. Always a different place each time.
300 attorneys, firm wide retreat once a year at luxury resort, typically has been in a city in close proximity to one of our larger offices. 2 nights. Programming during the day including presentation by MP on state of the firm, panels, breakout sessions, icebreakers to get to know attorneys from other offices, etc. Social events in the afternoon, such as golf, spa, beach/boating related activities, etc. Cocktail hours and dinners at night. There is enough social activities and downtime that it isn’t miserable, lol.
SGR?
200+ attorneys. Sr Associate/Counsel retreats every other year at a nice resort hotel. Programming for two days on client development, skill building and preparation for partnership. Partner retreats are every year and usually further away (could be national), a few days long, similar programs, families invited and bonding sessions.
