Coming into the office is 100% voluntary for us, and the office is pretty spread out, so I actually prefer it when people drop by my office to talk to me about something. We’re over 10 ft away from each other with masks on, and everyone who was seeing family for holidays self quarantined before/after so we haven’t had any issues. Plus, people only seem to drop by the offices of others who affirmatively say, “feel free to drop by my office.”
This is fundamentally a culture issue. The worst combination of factors is mandatory office presence plus lack of a proper social distancing ethic plus lack of respect for personal boundaries in the office—that’s where problems arise.
I think lawyers should be in the first phase for vaccination. Clients still stop by and the paralegal says “we’re a customer service industry”. Gurl, I’m not dying to help Susan and John with their custody dispute.
We get people stopping by without prior notice left and right, unfortunately.
Yeah, I get that. My comment wasn’t mean as “as a litigator, I’m special”. My state has a three phase plan and the first two phases have sub parts. We are moving on to phase 1B, which includes the elderly not in group facilities, correctional institution employees, and educators. For me, my frustration boils down to: everyone’s told only to interact with those in their households. Then the executive branch says the legal profession isn’t essential enough for some priority, but the judicial branch operations force my interaction with people not in my household. Anyways.
I’m in the office most days and generally I’m contacted by phone or email but every so often my supervising partner will stop by my office if the door is open to check in if he’s just passing by and has something to tell me or ask me.
98% phone or email. People very occasionally stop in but it’s super rare.
