For those of you required to be in office- do people use the phone and email to contact you or do they still come by in person? People in my office seem not to understand how the phone works...

I have a non business background, and I often noticed that to go a bit further on certain cases or distinguish yourself from others, some knowledge about the industry/sector can be good. During interview I was speaking to the hiring manager. Felt interview was going well. He seemed impressed by my answers, excited by my skills, and even gave me a tour of the office. At the end, he asked about my home life. When I spoke of my 3 young kiddos, the manager got a little taken back and replied Oh you have children? I said yes ages 3, 5, and 7. He then proceeded to ask me about daycare arrangements and if I can be reliable. Red flag as his demeanor changed and made me feel unworthy.

Recently hired Patent Agent and wanted to know if I am being fairly compensated and utilized. Training lasted a couple days where I immediately got assigned to draft +2 patent applications and +1 office action responses each week. Have no experience with 3D modeling programs so drawing diagrams and figures take a long time too. TOC < 80k and no annual bonus.

I find myself questioning basic politeness I’ve learned since a child. Wondering what everyone else thinks. I work with an associate. She’s great. When she does good work or something I’ve asked her to do, I, of course, say “thank you!” I don’t really expect a response. She always replies “you’re welcome!” Or some variation. And for some reason, that’s awkward. Is it just me? I know in normal manners, that is the right response. Why does it sit funny?
