I feel a little silly asking, but what are the environmental effects? The fact that I'm unaware myself makes me believe it's probably an awareness issue more than anything else.

I saw a while back a lady online talking about how she lives near an AI data center and is taking so much of her water pressure that she has to fill jugs up so that there’s enough water when she needs it
I only found out about this fairly recently. There was an article about a new data center being developed where I used to live. I started seeing people speaking out against it because of the environmental impact. It doesn’t get talked about enough. Everyone can make their own choices, but it’s concerning that so many people don’t even know about it!
I am also hoping it is talked about more, and before it starts impacting the people living near them! So easy to pretend it’s not a physical place, but it is.
I heard about this myself. I'm forced to use AI tools at work, but in my personal time, I try not to use them, partly because of this, partly because most times I can find out what I need just by Googling. I try to be as eco friendly as I can be, but it's really disheartening knowing that none of my efforts will make any real difference and the planet is pretty much doomed regardless 😔
I’m the exact same, I use it in work where i absolutely have to, but in my own time I will never use it. Ugh I know, it’s so sad knowing we can do everything in the world and it will barely make a dent to making a change :(

I think it’s another plastic straw situation where we need to worry about the big companies’ overuse of AI rather than the individual
Whilst I totally get that, it’s nearly all down to the blame of the big companies and the rich, however, individuals do total Up to a large number that could make a difference!
Also, plastic straws if very different to the massive levels of AI. One AI search is the equivalent of at least 10 google searches, which then it turn needs x10 the amount of energy and water to cool it down! It’s awful

I feel the same way! It’s scary how much energy AI uses, especially for things that don’t really need it. Hardly anyone talks about the environmental side of it.
