I just started in-house for the first time, as a first in house (IP) attorney in the US. I’m new to the role and the company is new to having an attorney. How do you feel about getting homework for jobs?

We're altering our interview process to eliminate a homework assignment we give to candidates. It's about 2 hours of varying difficulty questions.

The VP wants to replace it with a 1 hour pair programming exercise because he thinks experienced candidates won't bother with homework. A lot of my experienced colleagues would be fine with the homework as long as it was within reason.

What's the consensus? Homework or nah?

Hey guys, I just recently graduated with my bachelors degree and am working full time as a software engineer. I want to continue my education and in a few years apply to one of the bigger tech companies. Not necessarily a FAANG, but I would like to be prepared enough that I could take a job at a FAANG company at a mid senior level. What would you guys suggest doing to further my education? What do you think about switching tech stacks vs becoming an expert in one stack? I am a backend Java engineer, and have solely used Java since I've started my software engineering career about 2 years ago. I don't know whether I should explore other tech stacks while I'm young, or instead focus on becoming a Java expert, given that I enjoy working in Java.

CS and SWE is great in that it can be applicable to a great range of fields, to create immensely helpful tools for other things.

What are some areas where SWE intersects with things that help people, country, and the world? Now also add in making a decent living and generally competitive with other SWE “industry”.

Things that come to my mind are government-related, military, some fintech. Sciences have great need of computing, and can have big impact, but income is less clear.

I’m a mid level engineer and my team is overwhelmed. There’s more work than we can complete in the timelines that leadership/product has committed to, which is causing leadership to override technical decisions seemingly to meet those deadlines. An example would be routing all live traffic to a feature which was not fully tested, instead of waiting until testing is complete or having that change be dormant and the feature enabled later. Has anyone dealt with this type of issue?

I'm a SWE from Italy. Love my country but salary and taxes here are outrageous. Got 2yrs experience in fullstack and data science, 2masters, a peer reviewed paper and outperform all my peers for 24k€ a year.
I'm thinkin about landing a remote SWE job (leetcoding and building a portfolio this summer).
