Is it really stable when inflation is increasing faster than most raises? I would say it's not even stable at that point. For me, I'm focusing on finding another job. My company has made it clear they're not interested in meaningful raises or reasonable salary increases, so I have to go elsewhere.

You make a fair point and thanks for the response . If inflation is outpacing raises, calling it “stable” can feel misleading. At some point it becomes less about loyalty and more about protecting your earning power. That said, do you think there’s still value in trying to leverage internal mobility before deciding to leave, or has that window closed in most organizations?
My sense of it is that few companies are going to go out of their way to give substantial raises this year. Most seem obsessed with cutting costs. And with so many workers worrying about the continuing waves of layoffs, most people may be happy to hold on to their jobs, regardless of what their raise may be. I think for a lot of people 2026 will be a year to march in place and accept that the economy is not going to cooperate with their ambitions.

Thank you for this realistic take. Cost control and layoff concerns definitely shift the dynamic, and in that environment stability becomes its own currency. At the same time, long stretches of “marching in place” can impact motivation and retention. Do you think companies risk losing their top performers if 2026 turns into a holding pattern?
