My hippy sister is big into this kind of thing haha. She meditates for an hour every day on top of doing tons of yoga. I've tried it before but have never been able to get into that zen state. It makes me feel more anxious than relaxed so I just give up and start working 😂

Haha I get that. Sitting still with my thoughts sometimes makes me more restless than relaxed. Maybe it just clicks for some people more than others.
It has been around for decades, I think it first became a fad in the 1970s. There have been a lot of people who claim that doing a meditation session every morning makes them a better person. I never tried it. I think people said you have to go to a teacher to learn the technique and it didn't seem like my kind of thing.

Yeah, I’ve heard that too. A friend told me the intro course is something like eight hours of personal sessions spread over four days, which feels like a lot of commitment for meditation.

I’ve never heard of transcendental meditation, but I know meditation in general is research-backed for reducing overall stress and anxiety

That’s what interests me most - the research-backed benefits. But the in-person intro session feels like a huge time commitment.
