I was not, but I’ve never spoken to someone who was homeschooled as a kid who would choose it or recommend it - aside from one who was getting severely bullied. A lot of parents feel it’s the right decision for them, and their kids resent them for robbing them of the school experience.
We were forced to do it this year the third week of Kindergarten due to some unforeseen circumstances. We weren’t necessarily “onboard” with homeschooling and started just out of the necessity in the moment. I am thrilled to say that our son is thriving and so much happier! I would never have expected it but we have had a complete mindset shift on the topic. We have met so many others who have been homeschooled or who are now homeschooling their kids. The community has been great! Coming from someone who was NOT thrilled to be “thrown” into homeschooling unexpectedly, I am so happy and surprised how easy the transition has been for all of us. And with so many doing it in our community, there’s no shortage of social interactions. There are so many options for curriculum and it can be overwhelming but there are so many resources to help guide you. It’s not like it was when we were in school. Our son’s handwriting has improved tremendously; he could barely write his name and now he is writing sentences (with help). I know for a fact that he is doing better right now emotionally and academically than if he would be sitting in a classroom getting shuffled around for 6 hours a day. Trust your instincts. I learned about a lot of the issues only after we pulled him. The situation actually got worse after he was gone so glad we did it when we did. Good luck momma! You got this! PS please feel free to reach out if you need help!
I wasn’t homeschooled myself, but I know many moms who have chosen it and say it can be incredibly rewarding but also demanding. It really lets you tailor learning exactly to your kids’ strengths and interests, which sounds wonderful, but it can feel isolating and requires a huge time commitment. If your mom instinct is nudging you toward it, maybe try it part-time or explore hybrid models first to see how you both adjust.
Give it a try and make another decision later if it doesn't work out for you or for the girls. There are many co-ops and other communities available to get info. All the best to you!
I wish I could homeschool my kids. When they were toddlers I had an in home daycare and they started kindergarten and 1st grade off the 2nd grade curriculum. Now I supplement their education with books, conversations, documentaries etc we’ve had homeschooled kids that they’re friends with and they’re smart well adjusted kids. Majority of them but that can happen whether homeschooling or not.
