I know two senior associates who did this. It worked out for one, but not the other. The one it worked out for had spent all ten years of her career at the firm and was beloved by the group. She was also an antitrust associate in 2021, so I’m pretty sure she received a huge signing bonus when she asked to return. Another woman I know tried this at my next firm last year. She was similarly familiar with the group, but they didn’t need her back and she couldn’t get back into big law at all (she seems to be doing okay in mid law in a different market now).

Seems like a financial mistake. At my firm you get full salary and bonus eligibility with 22 weeks of leave. I wouldn’t want to lose out on that.

I spent the last 3 months "growing up" & now I'm ready to go. 1st thing is for me to get my own place. I'd like to buy instead of rent because I don't want to pay someone else's mortgage.

I'm thinking of selling my car & cash out some of my 401k to buy a house. My thought is to put down 3.5% for a FHA loan then make a big payment towards the principal to reduce long-term interest.

Anything wrong with this thinking or anything else I should consider?
