Has anyone left one job for another just due to maternity leave policies? I love *some* of the partners I work with, but the firm is not accommodating when it comes to pregnancy, and the maternity leave and pay is shit. I’d like to start trying for my 2nd baby in the next year. If I want to be with a firm for a full year before giving birth, I think I need to start looking elsewhere now? Any advice? Mat leave where I am is not negotiable. I would find partners I like anywhere, right?

Maybe it will be negotiable when you quit. Make sure you tell them why so they come into the 21st century to stop bleeding top talent.

Ha! I think some places it would be, but I doubt it here. I practice in a geographic area that’s pretty old guard. I think they honestly think I should feel lucky they offer short term disability with a rider that covers birth.

I did, and it was worth it. My last firm had 3 months but the new one offered 5 and that alone was worth the jump for me. I don’t love my partners as much but they’re flexible and that’s all I needed. I eventually went in house for my second and that was even better with 6 months and amazing coworkers.

I had a mentor in law school that said to make sure you’re at the right firm when you have kids if you want them. At the time I was 24 and didn’t even think I’d have kids. 31 now and I 100% get it. Thanks for replying!

Yes, it’s worth making career decisions solely to benefit your children.

Wow! The way you said that is really impactful to me. They’re only little for so long. That time is truly a gift you can’t get back once it’s gone.

Totally reasonable.
