About to join a startup in a Head of People & Culture position (currently 50 people and growing to 200+ over next year) I do not hold a degree in Human Resources or equivalent but hold relevant certs/quals, backed by 8 years of experience in TA and generalist HR. Does the community feel it’s beneficial to enrol in an MBA program (MBA HR Management for example) at this point in my career?

Leverage your network. That’s the most important thing you need to do. When you start, conduct a 90-day audit, meet the staff aka your colleagues and gather information through a pulse or engagement survey. Don’t spend all day in meetings and join a network like “Chief” to get you to the next level. I don’t know you but am proud of you. You got this and when you think you don’t. Message me.

“Don’t join a network like “Chief”” 😂😂😂

Not really. As head of HR, you will be expected to define the vision and strategy for the HR team, and don't need an MBA in HR to do it. You can hire a competent second level of leadership to build the processes.

likehelpful

Agreed. No need for an MBA. Yes need for networking with heads of HR at other “small” start ups to learn from them.

While it may not be critical to have e MBA or certifications, in small companies you will be strategist and practitioner so good to think about at least a certification to enhance technical knowledge -I ran HR for 200-over 1000 and having both masters and SPHR was a huge benefit as times I had to both lead and do (and that was after TA and HRBP) foundational experience

likehelpful

I don’t have a degree and I have my certification and 11 years of experience backing it up. You’ll be great! :) I wouldn’t go back and get your MBA unless you’re looking to move into stuffier organizations.

likefunny

You could do the Cornell HR certification program instead

If you feel that you could use more of a business overview to be able to understand the organization/business better outside of the HR lens, then do it or take other classes to shore up your business understanding. Has head of People, you will need to get a seat at the proverbial table and be good at negotiating and winning other leaders over. Not all executives believe in human capital as an asset.

I would suggest giving yourself at least 3-6 months to learn the company, the other leaders, and the undercurrent. Then assess what you need additional in knowledge.

Good luck!

No. I’d moreso recommend seeking out mentors and peers who have undertaken a similar role with that much scale up ahead. A lot of this will be learning as scaling happens so get to know other leaders and learn the mistakes to prevent/wins to focus on

MBA won’t be of much use now. However, you should opt for various HR certifications.

Don’t think MBA is necessary but if it’s part of your personal goal, then I think you should go pursue it for personal fulfillment!

Always invest in yourself. It can only do good just selective of the program and school but also see if it would beneficial to pursue specialized courses like organizational development or leadership training etc..

Joining the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) will be good to have. They provide great support and guidance too.

No need a MBA unless is your personal goal and you want some debts otherwise trust your experience and if they hire if because they think you are the right person for the role

I’m trying so hard to focus on work and to meet the expected bar for my current role. But the office politics here is toxic and always putting me down. Given the positive tone of our conversation, I expect to receive an offer this week.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?
