Honestly, I got my biggest raise by being super direct. I asked for a meeting, laid out exactly what I was looking for, and why it made sense for the business too. They didn’t say yes on the spot, but about a month later it came through. It feels awkward, but sometimes just asking plainly is the difference.
I did receive a considerable raise recently, but it was for a couple of reasons: I'd taken on a lot more work than was expected of my job title, and we also were recently acquired, and they were matching my salary to others in the company with similar titles. I know this doesn't happen often, so before that I'd taken on a freelance gig that I could manage on weekends and evenings to help with additional income.
I would consider all options. Start having talks in your current company and see if there is a path to promotion or raise. It does not hurt to look around either. Might find something that checks all the boxes and then some out there. Congratulations by the way!
I've gotten a few raises and internal promotions, but if you're looking to significantly increase your TC, you're almost always better off leaving. It's just the way it goes. The most I've received internally was 8%, the most I've received job hopping was 35%.
I get a marginal raise every year commiserate with performance
Once, but changing jobs is the more reliable way to do it. Timing made the difference when I received my 18% pay increase because we had just released a product I led the development on. Can you prove that your value to the company justifies the increase? Show that the industry standard for your area is higher than you are currently paid?
Yep just recently I was able to get a raise without jumping jobs. I basically went to my boss and told her that I needed to be making more and hadn't gotten a real raise in three years. I said if they wanted to keep me I needed a raise and she made it happen. I got an extra $6 an hour which was amazing.
